Punta Baluarte: Observatory Point of the Spanish Friars and Sanctuary of Sto NinO: Home of the Mysterious Sto NinO

There have been many places on earth that are rich in history and shrouded in mystery. Many historical sites around the world were renowned by the people and there are also some places where few people knew about them or their chronicle has not been written until this very moment. Today I will take your spirit to an important geographic location in Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, Philippines, which has been filled with remarkable memories and strangeness.

Punta Baluarte: During the Spanish occupation and Japanese invasion in World War II, this landmark served as an observation point for Spanish friars and later for Japanese soldiers. It is a hill overlooking the heart of Barangay San José and is magnificently surrounded by water. An island simply marked by a maroon colored replica of a castle. This little building has been standing on the hill for centuries. There have been written and unwritten events that took place at this somewhat legendary site. While you are inside the puzzling building, it seems that you have been transported to the ancient times. This place can offer a once in a lifetime experience and a trip to an earlier culture. Complementing this historical landmark is a variety of rainbow-colored kiosks beautifully positioned along the shoreline. It is a perfect place for a picnic activity while spending time with your loved ones and is a suitable place for relaxation. Punta Baluarte is located in Barangay San José, Surigao City and is approximately an hour’s motorboat ride from the city’s maritime terminal.

Santo Niño Shrine: It is situated in Barangay Serna (formerly Brgy. Bad-asay) and is home to a historic and mysterious sixteenth century (16th) century Santo Niño statue. Historically, this image was handed down by previous generations from the Sembrano chapel. The statue had been missing for quite some time, but was strangely found on the feast day of January 14, 1996 at Ayala Center, Cebu City, during the Santo Niño exhibition. The statue of the Santo Niño was believed to be miraculous. Come visit the sacred Santo Niño and his Sanctuary, meet him personally and caress his miracle. The venue can be reached in around 15 minutes by trike or multi-taxi from the heart of Surigao city.

Enrich every strand of your soul with the wonders that have inadvertently attached themselves to these amazing sites. Set your imagination free and explore the magnificent beauty of Surigao City.
