Do you visit Argentina? You can’t miss these wonders of the far south

o Enjoy the chocolate box landscape of glacial lakes, mountains and forests of the southern Lake District around Bariloche; then follow ‘the route of the seven lakes’ through spectacular mountain passes to San Martín and on to the Lanín National Park, dominated by the extinct snow-capped Lanín volcano (3776 m/12,386 ft).

o Stroll through the elegant Recoleta district of the capital, famous for its Recoleta Cemetery (where many members of the Argentine elite are buried) and the renowned National Museum of Fine Arts.

o Marvel at the multicolored houses and artistic talent of La Boca, where Italian immigrants settled to work in the shipyards and where tango was supposedly born.

o Soak up the atmosphere of the San Telmo neighborhood of Buenos Aires, with its many cafes, antique shops, tango nightspots and a Sunday flea market in Plaza Dorrego.

o Visit one of the oldest cities in Argentina, Corrientes, and see the church of the Santísima Cruz de los Milagros and the convent of San Francisco. Corrientes is also the land of chamamé, a characteristic type of rhythmic music derived from the polka.

o Discover the architecture of colonial Salta before stopping at the nearby pre-Inca ruins of Santa Rosa de Tastil; then travel through the arid and impressive red gorge of the Quebrada de Humahuaca, dotted with green oases.

o Stroll through Ischigualasto National Park, a desert valley also known as “the valley of the moon” due to its distinctive rock formations and fossils dating back some 180 million years.

o See the Andes mountain range crowned by Mount Aconcagua (6,995 m/22,944 ft), the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere, located within the Aconcagua National Park. The nearby Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) statue is a famous landmark at nearly 13,120 feet (4,000 m) above sea level, offering magnificent views.

o See the best places in Las Pampas and visit the picturesque peaks of the Sierra de la Ventana; note the traces of the colonial past in Santa Fe; and glimpse the pink granite rock formations of the Lihue Calel National Park.

o Let yourself be dazzled by the absolute power of the Iguazú Falls; see this majestic series of waterfalls in

Devil’s Throat, which can be accessed via a system of walkways over the thundering water; and take a boat trip through the mist and spray at the base of the falls.

o Surprise yourself with nature in Península Valdés; see herds of seals, sea lions and take a boat trip to watch whales. Then visit the Punta Tombo penguin colony.

o Feel the cold in Los Glaciares National Park with the Perito Moreno Glacier as its centerpiece, where huge icebergs break off and fall into Lake Argentino.

o Journey to the ‘end of the earth’ in Tierra del Fuego, the gateway to Antarctica; board a boat to explore the marine and bird life of the Beagle Channel; and walk the streets of Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, surrounded by rugged mountain peaks.
