Throwback: OPM bands and their songs

Who says that only an old photo of you can be retrograded? The OPM bands and their songs deserve a throwback too! Whether you’re a baby from the 70s, 80s, 90s or 2000s, we can all feel nostalgic every time we hear those songs from the past. Here are some OPM bands and their famous songs that will always blow us away.

Boyfriends

This famous band from the 1970s consisting of Gary Ariola, Bob Guzman, Artie Ilacad and Lloyd Sale will always be a crowd favorite. Decades have passed since their best year, but so far, Pinoys still can’t get over their songs, especially “Sumayaw, Sumunod,” which has also been used as a soundtrack to many Filipino comedy movies.

Cinderella

Personally, I think that no matter how old you are, you can’t possibly not know the melody of “Ang Boyfriend Kong Baduy” and the adorable and sentimental song “TL Ako Sa’yo”. Although I was not born in the time of his prominence, I am still in love and still cherish these Cinderella songs. Unfortunately, Yolly Samson, their lead singer died of brain cancer 17 years ago, making it difficult for Cinderella to replicate those OPM hits they had. However, it’s okay, his songs are enough to be part of our hearts.

hot dog

This band made up of brothers Dennis and Rene Garcia surely got all disco lovers dancing back in the 70’s to their famous hits like “Annie Batungbakal” and “Bongga Ka, Day!”. I still remember seeing many versions of choreography with these songs. They really touched and caught Pinoy’s hearts and they surely know our kiliti when it comes to OPM hits for having simple lyrics but accompanied by great melody and catchy tune.

Apo Hiking Society

Aaaaahh, the good times! Notably known for the charming and fun trio of Jim Paredes, Danny Javier and Boboy Garavillo, this band proved to us that they are not only the best in terms of songs, but also in terms of attractiveness. “Batang Bata Ka Pa”, “Syotang Pa-class” and “Doo Bi Doo” are just some of the songs that we continue to enjoy even now. Fortunately, this trio appears and sings their songs live on national television from time to time.

Parokya nor Edgar

I know this band doesn’t have that throwback stuff as they are still very, very active even up to now, but I admit it, we miss their late 90’s songs like “Buloy”, “Picha Pie” and that soulful, soulful song, with a great guitar solo, mind you – “Flatter.” In fact, we are very fortunate that Parokya and Edgar are still making new songs that Pinoys will enjoy again.

Hale, Imago, Spongecola, Callalily, Silent Sanctuary

In the mid-2000s, these boy bands with cute members who can sing and play guitar were a hit again. Hale’s “The Day You Said Goodnight”, “Taralets!” From Imago, Spongecola’s “Tuliro”, Callalily’s “Magbalik” and Silent Sanctuary “Ikaw Lamang” were the songs that walked us through our good times and bad and we are glad to have them.
