Credit card authorization advice

Most of us use credit or debit cards regularly, and there is usually no problem verifying that these cards belong to us. However, sometimes there are additional security measures or technical problems that make it difficult to verify if a card belongs to someone or not. If you find yourself in this situation, there are a number of steps you can take to resolve the situation.

Enter the wrong PIN

If you have multiple cards or are just in a hurry, it can be easy to enter the wrong PIN at an ATM or retail machine. If this happens, you have two more chances to enter the correct PIN. Sometimes a software bug can cause your PIN to not be authorized, especially on chip and PIN handheld machines. If you are not sure of your PIN, stop trying. If you enter the wrong PIN three times, your card will be blocked and you will have to call your card issuer to resolve the situation.

Calling your card issuer

When you need to resolve a dispute or have your card issuer answer some questions, you may need to provide some information. Simply providing your card number and name will not suffice, and you will also need to provide your credit limit, date of birth or bank statement details. Although this may seem like a tedious process, it is for your own safety.

Store authorization on the phone

When you buy something in a store, there are times when additional information is required. These checks are usually done by the card company and are random, and help monitor security levels. Typically, you will be asked for additional personal information or card details to verify your purchase. If this happens to you, don’t think you’re in trouble, just remember that it’s all for your own safety.

If your card is denied

There is a chance that even if you have enough credit, your card will be denied. This could mean that your card has been used illegally or simply that the authorization system is not working properly and your card cannot be verified. Try to stay calm and don’t panic as this can happen to anyone at any time. You can always try the card again, but if it doesn’t work, you’ll need to use another card or call your card issuer right away. The problem can usually be fixed very quickly.

Signing for your purchases

If you go somewhere and are still asked to sign for your goods instead of using Chip and PIN, be very careful. Everywhere should make you use Chip and PIN now, and if they don’t, they are putting you and themselves at greater risk of fraud. Make sure proper authorization is given before paying anything. This will help your card stay safe and secure.
