Speed up your login form and report design tasks with custom templates!

“Do overs” are fun if you are playing a game. They are no fun when designing Access database forms and reports. We’ll show you an easy way to save time every time you create a new form or report.

Access wizards do a great job helping you create a form with the text boxes and combo boxes you need. But, it does a lousy job of formatting the forms that the Wizard creates. You have to resize all the controls and align them and change the font, background color, background style; I get tired of thinking about it. Here’s a time-saving tip that can greatly speed up your Form and Report development time.

You can save a lot of time by creating and using your own custom form template and default control properties. To create a form template, create a form with the desired formatting and control properties and save it as “Template.” On the menu bar, click Tools | Options and then select the Forms / Reports tab. In the Form template box, type “Template.” Note that you can also create a report template. Click OK and you are good to go for faster form development.

The next time you create a new form or report, it will have the form and control properties that you saved in the template. If you create a lot of forms and reports, this tip will save you a lot of time.
