This is a question to ask yourself before purchasing a Shih Tzu, as they will spend a lot of time in each other’s company. Making the wrong decision can lead to years of unhappiness, so make sure you do it right.
Some things to consider include the following.
1. Fellowship
Shih Tzu were bred just for companionship. Most have very social personalities and there are few things a Tzu likes more than sitting on their laps while watching television.
However, if you and your family work and must leave the dog at home all day, a Shih Tzu may not be the dog for you. They require more attention than most other dogs and their presence is an important part of their well-being.
2. Toilet
This breed has a double coat and long hair. Hair requires frequent brushing to avoid tangling. The nails also require frequent trimming as a Shih Tzu doesn’t spend a lot of time outdoors. This results in nails that are not naturally filed by gravel and similar surfaces.
3. Other animals
Most Shih Tzu get along well with other animals. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for other dog breeds. If you have an aggressive dog like a pit bull, it’s best to think twice before bringing a Tzu home, especially if the other dog is an alpha male. Large dogs like Great Danes can also unknowingly hurt a small dog while playing.
Most dogs do not like cats and you should be especially careful with a Shih Tzu, as the cat’s long nails can seriously damage its bulging eyes.
4. Exercise
If you are looking for a companion to accompany you on your morning five mile run, do not consider this breed as an option. Shih Tzu have short, flat noses, so they have trouble breathing properly. A short walk around the block is all they need, nothing more.
5. Indoor living and space
If you are staying in an apartment with limited space, this breed is a good choice. A Shih Tzu is your typical indoor dog and nothing will make him happier than listening to your voice all day and spending time with you on the couch.
They don’t tolerate heat very well and that’s another reason they should stay indoors. This is especially true if you are staying in a warm area.
6. Children
Shih Tzu are very popular with children. Their adorable expressions make them one of the most popular family pets. They are small and fragile, so consider getting one if you have very young children who cannot tell the difference between a live animal and a stuffed animal.
7. Snorts and snoresThe upturned nose and small mouth, together in a short face, make some Shih Tzu have trouble drinking and should only be given water in small shallow bowls or a drinking bottle similar to those used by hamsters and guinea pigs. Their flattened nasal passages make them more prone to snorting and snoring.
