Sitting correctly in an office chair is vital to providing adequate support for your spine, lower back, and neck.
Many office workers often complain of back pain, which in most cases is due to the chair not being positioned correctly. Even if you have an ergonomic chair that has been specially designed for comfort, you still need to make sure you have it configured to suit your workplace. These days, there are so many ergonomically designed office chairs out there too, so you really have a huge variety to choose from.
The first thing to do is sit in your chair in front of your computer screen. Close your eyes and then slowly open them; the line of your eyes should point towards the center of the screen. If this is not the case, you can place some large books under the screen to correct it. If you miss this step, you could be causing unnecessary strain on your neck – your head actually weighs about the same as a bowling ball, so it puts a lot of pressure on your neck if you’re constantly looking down.
Second, you need to make sure that you are sitting back in your chair, not perching on it in the middle. By placing your lower right side against the back of the chair, you are offering additional lower back support. Once you have ensured that you are seated correctly, place your elbows on the table, they should be at a 90 degree angle, if not, the height of your chair may need a slight adjustment.
Pull yourself up so that you are hidden under the table (your thighs should not touch the table) again if this is the case, the height of your chair needs a slight adjustment. Your feet should also be flat on the floor. If you have shorter legs, perhaps you could invest in a footrest.
Once you are satisfied with your position, make sure all your computer equipment is properly positioned around you; You shouldn’t have to stretch too far to reach anything.
