Ferret care: pros and cons

Do you already have your ferret at home? Congratulations on becoming an owner. Being a proud ferret owner also comes with great responsibilities. So what do you need to do to provide the right kind of care for ferrets? Here are some dos and don’ts for you:

behind

o Provide a comfortable home: If you have a cage for your ferret, make sure it is spacious enough for him to live in it. And since they spend most of their time sleeping, it is important that it is comfortable and good to rest. Provide the floor of the cage with bedding to cover the gaps, this is to prevent the ferret from getting stuck and possibly injuring itself. You should also have a sleeping bag for the ferret to sleep on; When the weather is cold, ferrets like to sleep indoors to keep warm. This helps maintain your body’s natural temperature. And when the temperature is warm, it is also good to have a ferret hammock inside the cage. They would be sleeping here to have good air circulation. It would also be nice to have a water bottle so they can easily drink water when they need it. It would also be nice to provide a dark area in the cage to protect the ferret from sunlight and artificial lights.

o Ferret Testing: This is about making sure your home does not have small holes, cracks or crevices that the ferret can get into and hurt itself. If you find any of these, repair them. You would also need to check your electrical wires, make sure the ferret cannot reach them. You should buy safety covers to protect your electrical outlets and also cover your electrical cords if possible. If you can’t do this yourself, it would be nice to hire an expert to set it up for you.

o Ferrets diet: the food that we provide them should be rich in protein and fat, since these two nutrients are the basic needs of their bodies. It is up to you to decide if you would like to give a single brand food or if you would like to provide a variety of diets. Provided that the diet provides 35% protein and 20% fat.

o Annual check-up and vaccinations: having a continuous check-up with the vet helps prevent the ferret from contracting diseases by getting vaccinated regularly. And it is also good at detecting symptoms of the early stages of the disease.

Not to do

o Snacks: When giving your pet snacks, be sure to avoid fruits and sweets. These could cause obesity, tooth decay, and could also endanger your ferret. A disease that is common in ferrets called insulinoma is often caused by eating snacks and sweet foods. If you want to give your ferret a treat, it is recommended to give it cooked eggs instead; it is good and beneficial for them.

o Dairy products: they should also be avoided.

o Nut and nut products cause nutritional problems for ferrets and should not be given.

o Cereals and vegetables are not digestible for ferrets. It is better to avoid giving this type of food.

o Onions are poisonous to ferrets, you should definitely avoid adding this ingredient to the food you provide them.

By knowing what to do and what to avoid, we are equipping ourselves with the knowledge to keep our ferret healthy and capable of living a happier and longer life.
